The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday revealed that 11,270 cases of cross border firing have taken place from 2002 till 2015 which have resulted in death of 169 civilians and 735 injured.

The number of Security Forces (SF) killed and injured, is less than those of the civilians.

So far, 144 Security Personnel have died and 311 have injured, the government said in a written reply to MLC Naresh Kumar Gupta on yearly basis reports from 2002 to 2015.

2002 has witnessed 8376 cases of border firing incidents, leaving 345 civilians and 157 SF injured, while 76 and 58 civilians and SF have died, respectively.

2003 has seen comparatively less number of border firing incidents, 2045, resulting in death of 59 and 40 civilians and SFs, respectively.

However, 2004 did not see any such case and resulted in the overall abrupt decline in the figures, after 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.

2013 showed a surge with 229 cases in the border firing incidents that resulted in death of 12 SFs and left 25 SFs and 26 civilians injured. However, no case of civilian death was reported.

2015 witnessed 222 cases of cross border firing leaving 16 civilians dead and 71 injured.

In comparison to civilians, the number of deaths and injuries caused to Security Forces were much less, with a total of 9 and 14, respectively.

So far, 180 houses have been damaged because of cross fire during the said period.
