Resident of Sonawar blocked road and resorted to tyre-burning and road obstructions to demand the release of the Imam of Jamia Masjid.

Identified as Reyaz Ahmad, a resident of Kupwara, locals said he was arrested within hours after he reported back from his home last evening. They alleged that the cops raided his residence and took him away. They said they lack an idea where he was being held and they wanted to know the charges against him.

After the protests disrupted routine in the area, police resorted to tear-smoke shelling and fired a few PAVA canisters. Besides, pellets were also fired. There was, however, no report of any injury so far. This helped police to restore vehicular movement in the area.

Efforts to get the details about the charges against the particular Imam could not immediately succeed.
