Under ‘public pressure’ a Jammu and Kashmir policeman publically announced his resignation in Apple Town Sopore of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The incident occurred at Behrampora village of the town on Monday evening.

Locals said that two Special Police Officers (SPOs) of Special Operation Group, Firdous Ahmed and Waseem Ahmed Shiekh, told the locals that they want to resign from the Police Department publically.

“On Monday evening Waseem Ahmed (driver) a resident of Behrampora posted at SDPO office Rafiabad Sopore publically resigned while another cop Firdous Ahmed, a resident of Thakgund Sopore, though didn’t emerge in the village send a word that he too will resign from the job,” said an eyewitness.

Locals said that shortly after the killing of a local Hurriyat activist Fayaz Ahmed Rather on 29 July last month at the hands of “unknown” gunmen, people had asked local policemen to resign from the department.

“Both the cops on Monday evening announced their resignations. But so far, only Waseem Ahmed made a public announcement in this regard while Firdous Ahmed has promised to do so,” said locals.

When contacted a police official said that “nobody has tendered his resignation”.

“I don’t know what you mean by saying resigning publically. There is a procedure and so far no cop has tendered his resignation,” he said.
