The fire which broke out at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Nowgam Campus-I on Tuesday morning has heavily damaged the electronic equipment and other items in the Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ), said the spokesman of varsity.

The fire, spokesman said presumably emanated from the media studio and spread to the other adjoining rooms of the department. “There was a major damage to the costly equipment and the infrastructure of the media studio, which was of the state-of-the-art in itself. Despite fire safety measures, the studio suffered extensive damages,” he said and added that the exact cause of fire is not known and is being ascertained by the police and relevant quarters.

The faculty and other administrative staff were safely evacuated and rescued by the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Department and by other staff members of the varsity. One of the faculty members of the Department of Tourism Studies and few members from the administrative staff sustained minor injuries in the incident.

“The fire was brought under the control due to the timely intervention of the personnel of the Fire and Emergency department. The personnel of the SDRF also made efforts to contain the fire and evacuated some of the staff members” he said and added that Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir and other senior functionaries of the varsity were personally supervising the rescue operation.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir chaired a meeting and thanked the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Department, administrative staff and other faculty members of the varsity for putting their efforts in containing the fire. He lauded the efforts of the some of the staff members for carrying out the evacuation. Prof. Mir also thanked the Divisional Administration and the Police for their help in maintaining the law and order during the incident.

Prof. Mehraj ud Din said that despite the major tragedy all the End Semester Examination (ESE) of university scheduled to be conducted from December 15, 2017, would be held on time.

A formal FIR has been lodged and a Committee has been also constituted by the university to probe the cause of fire.
