As this southern district of Kashmir valley, like other districts, erupted in celebration after Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in a nail biting cricket match of the Champions Trophy 2017 at Cardiff, according to locals of Vehil village of the district, the army personnel from the neighbouring Chodurgund army camp along with SOG of the Jammu and Kashmir Police went on a rampage in the village and ransacked public and private properties including parked vehicles, window panes of houses and shops.

A local told Kashmir Life that the Pakistan win was celebrated by bursting firecrackers. As soon as the bangs of firecrackers went into the air, it apparently irked the forces personnel of the 44 RR camp in the neighboring Chodubugh village.

‘Within no time a posse of army personnel reached the village by firing in the air. It sent waves of fear across the village,’ he said and added that then the worst came.

‘The whole village was vandalized. The locks of shops were broken apart and were later ransacked. Several houses were completely ransacked, dozens of vehicles were damaged in the army action,’ he said. ‘When some locals tried to confront the army personnel, they were beaten to pulp,’ he said.

SP Shopian AS Dinkar could not be reached despite repeated attempts.
