Hailing Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for the passing of historic Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill in the state legislature, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youth president, Waheed-Ur-Rehman Parra in a meeting with district youth coordinators at Party head office, said, upholding the supremacy and sanctity of the institutions through dialogue and discussions forms an essential component of the party’s idea of empowerment of people.

“Unless we ensure dignity and respect for our institutions like the legislature, which is most empowered and unique House in the country after parliament, we can’t expect a better deal for the state. Let’s not go into the details that how the parties like National Conference have, in the past, become part of the bad game that led to systematic erosion of the Jammu & Kashmir’s special position, but the way Mehbooba and her entire cabinet handled the GST issue is highly commendable. It is the remarkable achievement, as for the first time our constitutional position is endorsed,” he said while interacting with the party’s youth wing members here.

Para said the implementation of the new tax regime will guarantee financial autonomy to the state and its biggest beneficiary would be the consumer. “J&K being the consumer state will benefit the most under GST. The government will ensure enough safeguards for the state’s financial autonomy while implementing it,” he added.

Appreciating the role of Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu, Para said the implementation of the GST law was an open test for the government and people like Dr Drabu and others stood the ground and made it possible after thorough discussions and deliberations.
