SRINAGAR: Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on the highway between Ramban and Banihal as landslides blocked the access in between. The landslides were the outcome of the highway expansion.

Traffic Police sources said the boulders hit the highway at Rattanbas belt late last night. The clearance operation has started but will take time.

Commuters who are stuck up at Ramsu said they have been asked to wait till the road is cleared. They said they have been waiting for many hours now.

A spokesman of the Traffic Police in Srinagar said they are permitting only light vehicles to move towards Jammu from Srinagar on the highway. “We have to first clear the vehicles which are stuck in between,” the spokesman said.

However, a lot of people are stranded at Banihal who had taken the train from Baramulla and Srinagar. They are waiting for the road clearance, which is expected to take a few hours more. Reports said a couple of bulldozers have been deployed to clear the spot. But the officials do not know if it leads to more boulder fall.
