incident to Shopian where he had reached to condole the family of the deceased women.
The Shia cleric, who is also the senior vice-president of Peoples Democratic Party, first compelled police to address a news conference to dispel rumours about his arrest. The rumour had led to protests and subsequent stone pelting in certain areas of Srinagar. Though other party leaders, police said, were taken to Kothibagh Police Station for allowing them to safely board their vehicles to reach their residences, Ansari had reached the police station fifteen minutes later.
Though the reluctance of leaders to leave the police station resulted in government accepting their demand for their march to Shopian, Ansari was yet to fire all the shots in his arsenal.
Greeted with allegations of playing vote bank politics at the victims’ home in apple town, Ansari boarded his car and sped away to take refuge in the town’s police station leaving his Party President, Mehbooba Mufti, stranded in her car surrounded by a restless mob that was demanding the resignation of PDP leaders before they made any statement about the Shopian incident.
The politician later received his party president at the police station where he voiced ample support to her demand for registering an FIR for rape and murder. Just that an hour had passed between his opportunistic flee from the victims’ home and the reception at police station.
