SRINAGAR: Authorities have conveyed detained separatist Dr Muhammad Qasim Fuktoo that he can talk to his wife, already jailed, a spokesman of the Muslim Deeni Mahaz (MDM) said.

Fuktoo is jailed for the last 24 years. His wife Asiya Andrabi, who heads the Dukhteran-e-Milat is also in jail for last few months.

While Faktoo is in Central Jail Srinagar, Ms Andrabi is in Amphalla jail, Jammu. The latter is unwell for a long time.

“Dr Muhammad Qasim who has completed 24 years in prison had asked the court to allow him to communicate with his incarcerated ailing wife Asiya Andrabi who is in Amphala jail under jail authorities supervision,” a statement issued by the MDM said. “The court denied permission observing that it was under the purview of jail authorities. About a couple of months back  the jail authorities assured Dr Muhammad Qasim that he  would be allowed to talk to his wife, But now the jail authorities have informed that they had sent the matter to home ministry  and  the reply is awaited.”

MDM said J&K is probably the only state in the world where communication between husband and wife is subservient to the orders of home ministry. It termed the response “astonished” and “tyrannical” but insisted “this in no way will break their resolve.” The spokesman termed the situation worst than Ikhwan era.
