KEG appoints Ali M Sofi as Kashmir Wire CEO

SRINAGAR: Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) has appointed the veteran journalist, Ali Mohammad Sofi as CEO of, to-be launched news service, KASHMIR WIRE.

In a statement issued here today, a spokesman of KEG said that Ali Mohammad Sofi, in consultation with select members of KEG, will start the process of holding interviews and selection for the already advertised posts of editors and reporters.

Sofi, a veteran journalist retired as PTI Bureau Chief Srinagar in 2010 after working for this prestigious wire service for nearly 43 years.

He had joined PTI as a sports reporter and during his tenure became the first president of the sports journalists association having won several awards including Gold Medal for outstanding coverage of D.P. Dhar Memorial Hockey tournament in 1981.

His role was not restricted to sports only but he covered political events too which was appreciated by the management of the PTI and in recognition of which he was elevated to senior grade in 1982. He again was promoted to the higher rank and grade in 1988 and finally elevated as Bureau Chief in 1990 which assignment he handled extraordinarily for 20 years.

He was bestowed with the special award for coverage of 1996 Assembly election of J&K and was also declared as best correspondent by a panel of journalists on the anniversary of prominent journalist Shaheed Mohammad ShabanVakil in 1997-98.

He was chosen as an outstanding media person in 2002-2003 and was also honored by All Parties Migrant Coordination Committee in 2010 for impartial reporting. He was declared reporter of the year by the PTI management in 1993 for coverage of Hazratbal hostage crisis.
