An attack by a suspected armed group on a Sarpanch in Wagum village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district demonstrates disregard for human life, Amnesty International India said Friday said in a statement.

Unknown gunmen fired at 43-year-old Mohammad Yusuf Bhat on Wednesday night when he was on his way to a local mosque for prayers. He was immediately taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Amnesty International India consistently opposes human rights abuses committed by armed groups in Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said.

Authorities must bring the perpetrators in the shooting of Mohammad Yusuf Bhat to justice in proceedings that meet international fair trial standards, the statement added.
