The lawmaker of Langate and president Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) Er Rasheed Monday led a peaceful protest in Srinagar to press for the demand seeking IIT and IIM for Kashmir province.

Raising slogans in favour of IIT and IIM, the MLA-led protest march started from Jahangir Chowk and proceeded towards civil secretariat where it was stopped by a heavy contingent of police.

Police didn’t allow protesters to march further, however, they succeeded in reaching few meters away from the main gate of civil secretariat where they had a peaceful sit-in.

Speaking on the occasion Er Rasheed said that New Delhi has chosen the way of “disgracing, ignoring and insulting” Kashmiris and reminded central government that it had announced at the floor of the parliament establishing of an AIIMS for Kashmir and IIT and IIM for Jammu province but some senior ministers of central government including Dr Jatinder Singh provoked Jammuties as a part of their pre-planed agenda against granting AIIMS to Kashmir and ultimately it ended up with announcing AIIMS for Jammu.

“Kashmiris are not against providing these institutions to Jammu region but have every right to seek IIT and IIM for Kashmir which comprises major portion of the state,” he said. “If Union Government can agree to the demand of a handful of people of Jammu district who don’t represent Chenab Valley and Pirpanchal region why should it not establish IIM and IIT in Kashmir?”

People of Jammu have always got benefits from sufferings of Kashmiri people, he said: “The Prime Ministers Reconstruction Programme (PMRP) which was meant for militancy hit areas of the state was badly misused and Ladakh and Jammu regions got the major shares from it.”

Er Rasheed asked Mufti to explain that why he should not apologise Kashmiris for not being able to fulfil his promises which he has made with people and had argued that BJP being in the power in the centre can accommodate grievances of Kashmiris at developmental front much better.

“PDP leaders were praising Narendra Modi day and night and were promising stars and moons to Kashmiris but now BJP is not only letting Mufti Sahib down but by making Kashmiris to beg for everything, union government stands exposed,” he said.

He asked central government to announce IIT and IIM for Kashmir at an earliest and should not underestimate the people’s might as people of Kashmir will have no option but to take to streets.

Er Rasheed stressed upon all political parties and trade organisations to stand up against this discrimination and should force Union Government to establish IIM and IIT in Kashmir.
