One Hizbul Mujahideen militant died in an overnight gunfight with forces at Pahlipora village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, a police officer told Kashmir Life.

The slain militant was identified as Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of Nazneenpora Shopian. “He was involved in militancy related activities since February 2015,” the official said.

The encounter erupted on Monday late evening after a joint team of the Army, CRPF and police cordoned Pahlipora village following information about the presence of militants there, police said.

During searches, militants fired on the forces from the residential house, triggering a gun battle.

Meanwhile, reports coming from North Kashmir said that an encounter is going on between forces and suspected militants in Kupwara district.

Forces had cordoned off Zonrishi and Marsari villages of the district last evening after inputs about the presence of militants.

Reports added that vehicular movement has also been suspended on Chowkibal-Tangdar road.
