Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq will deliver Friday sermon at historic Jamia Masjid in Old City area of Srinagar on Friday after the government lifted siege around his Nigeen residence.

The Kashmir’s head priest spent more than 50 days under house detention during which he was not allowed to deliver the sermon at the grand mosque. He wasn’t even allowed to lead the Eid—ul-Fitr prayers and the mandatory Jummat-ul-Vida prayers.

Mirwaiz was kept under house detention after the killing of Dy SP of Jammu and Kashmir Police Muhammad Ayoub Pandit. Pandit was beaten to death after he was confronted by a group of people outside the grand mosque premises.

Mirwaiz during the detention days issued a number of statements in which he blasted the government for its “oppressive measures and human rights” violations.
