Srinagar: National Conference veteran and former minister Ali Mohammad Naik Friday evening passed away at his Srinagar residence. He was in eighties. His body is right now being driven to Tral for last rites, reports said.

Naik has been a old political activist who was Secretary General of Mahaz-e-Rai Shumari. He was elected to the state assembly four times, was minister thrice and was last elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 when he defeated Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Naik was one of the many NC lawmakers who ditched Dr Farooq Abdullah and topped his government by allying with Ghulam Mohammad Shah. Shah made him the Revenue Minister. Post-1990, Naik and almost all others returned to NC, contested and were elected to the assembly.

After Naik completed his term as MP, he was attacked by militants in which he survived seriously injured. He survived with the handicaps of that attack till his death. He spent most of his post-attack days as being member of the in-house legislative committee to choose the best lawmaker in debates and discussions.

Naik is survived by two sons, both are government employees.
