SRINAGAR

Expressing serious concern over the persistent and repeated incidents of ceasefire violations committed by Pakistani forces, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha & former Chief Minister of J&K,  Ghulam Nabi Azad said that unprovoked firing is a source of constant agony and mental stress for the people of border areas.

Azad expressed grief and shock on the unfortunate death and injuries to civilians as well as death of a security jawan in Pakistani firing, saying that deaths of our jawans and civilians on the borders have become a regular feature ever since the NDA Government has come to power at Centre. “I convey my heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family”, said Azad.

Slamming the NDA government for miserably failing to put a halt to ceasefire violations by Pakistan as was promised by it to the people of the country, Azad said that persistent ceasefire violations have made the life of people living in border areas miserable and they are forced to lead a life marked by fear, uncertainty and mental stress.

Azad, while empathising with the people living in border areas, said that their children are unable to receive proper education and they are unable to cultivate their lands and that their lives, properties, livestock, crops, etc remain under perpetual threat due to tension and unprovoked Pakistani firing.

Reminding the NDA Government and BJP leadership of its pre-election rhetoric regarding the subject, Azad asked why the ceasefire violations have not come to an end after the NDA Government came to power, “as was promised so ostentatiously by the Honble Prime Minister before the Lok Sabha elections.”

According to a statement, Azad said that failure of the NDA Government is visible on its face in the light of the fact that Director General BSF in the month of August this year has admitted the firing and shelling on the International Border (IB) with Pakistan to be “heaviest” after the 1971 war.

While condemning Pakistani forces for continuously committing ceasefire violations, particularly the prolonged violations in the month of July and August this year which led to the death of many of our jawans and civilians as well as migration from the border areas, Azad said the Central Government has failed to respond proportionately, adequately and effectively which probably has emboldened the Pakistani forces to perpetuate the tensions, thus creating hardships for our people residing in the border areas.

“It seems that Pakistan is taking the new government non-seriously and is hell bent to create tension in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir”, said Azad.

Azad said that NDA Government’s Pakistan policy is marked by inconsistencies and flip-flops of weird proportions,  as one day it is over zealously enthusiastic about talks, and the other day it raises shrill jingoistic clamour for war, adding that the people of the country are wise enough not to lose sight of the manipulative politics being played by BJP.

Criticising the NDA Government for its overzealous overtures to court Pakistan by exchanging sarees and shawls, and laying red carpet to Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharief even before taking the oath, Azad said that the misconceived and incoherent Pakistan policy driven by electoral calculations has emboldened the Pakistani forces to indulge in misadventures and that the response of Government of India has been marked by ineffectiveness and vacillation.

“I want to remind the BJP and its leadership that people of the State are wise enough to see through their tantrums and will not get perpetually be-fooled by their double-speak. BJP’s strong anti-Pakistan  noises within the country and sending of emissaries like Ved Pratap Vedik to Pakistan to hobnob with hardcore and known anti-India elements like Hafiz Sayed is being keenly watched by the people of the country”, said Azad, adding that BJP’s double-speak has been fully exposed before the people.

Azad said that border people have always suffered during the BJP rule be it Kargil war of 1999, border build-up of 2001, or the current spate of relentless ceasefire violations, adding that following massive build-up of 2001, it took many years to UPA Government at the Centre and Congress-PDP Government in the State to restore normalcy in the border belt.

Sh Azad said that Government has not failed in its Pakistan policy rather its China policy also has been lack lustre and uninspiring, in view of the regular incursions by People’s Liberation Army of China in Ladakh sector.

Lambasting the Central Government for its failure to contain Chinese incursions, Azad said that what can be more galling and embarrassing than the fact that Chinese forces intrude into our territory when their President Xi Jinping is on an official visit to India and yet our Prime Minister cringes to extend “protocol” and spread Gujarati dishes for him on the table.

Highlighting the failures of NDA Government, Sh Azad said that they  have misled the people  to garner their votes and now they are diverting their attention by giving excuses on all the issues that they used to raise before elections, be it ceasefire violations by Pakistan, Chinese incursions,  price rise, return of black money, etc
