Police Friday claimed that the burglar who was beaten ruthlessly by people after being caught by them while stealing cattle from a house in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district breathed his last at SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura. Police lodged a case against the people and called six of them in police station for questioning. However locals staged a protest alleging that burglar died of torture in police custody.

According to reports, during the intervening night of July 29 and 30, four burglars broke into the cattle shed of one Bilal Ahmed son of Sonullah Dar at Kulpora, Kulgam and stole two sheep. During the process people chased all the four burglars and caught hold of two of them identified as Abdul Jabbar Shiekh son of Ghulam Rasool resident of Bolsoo Kulgam and Ghulam Nabi Shiekh son of Ghulam Mohammad resident of Bhan.

Police said that Jabbar Shiekh was beaten ruthlessly by people soon after people captured him and it was only after sound thrashing that people informed police handed them over to police. Police registered a case against the burglars vide FIR number 192/2013 under section 457, 380 RPC.

A police official told CNS that Jabbar was shifted to Kulgam Hospital for treatment where from he was rushed to SKIMS where he died on Friday. “We have registered a case vide FIR number 196 under section 302, 148, 323 and 342 of RPC against the miscreants and investigation has been put up,” a police official said.

Meanwhile locals alleged that police in custody tortured Jabbar Shiekh. They staged a protest against the police and demanded a thorough probe into the matter.
