SRINAGAR: Protests against the US declaration of Jerusalem continue in Kashmir for the last three days now.On Monday, scores of religious scholars and Imams of various mosques held a symbolic protest at press colony Srinagar.

The protesters carried placards and banners seeking revocation of US decision and intervention of the international community.

They chanted slogans against the US president Donald Trump, America and Israel. They carried banners with slogans “Down with Trump” and “Jerusalem an eternal capital of Palestine” and “Long Live Palestine! Long Live Islam”.

.“We are here not to denounce Trump’s statement but to discard it and request international community to step in and try to resolve the conflict” said one of the angry protestor.

US president’s announcement declaring the historic city as Israel’s capital has provoked condemnation from different parts of the world especially the Muslim world.

Several countries, including Russia and Saudi Arabia, have slammed Trump’s decision, saying that this is a matter that needs to be resolved between Israel and Palestine. The larger consensus emerging in responses to the Trump decision suggest that the future of Jerusalem should have been the outcome of a negotiation process, rather than a decision made by one country.

The decision has already triggered unrest in the occupied territories. The United Nations has summoned a special session of the world body on Friday. The decision was taken by the eight of the 15 members of the UN Security Council. The UN special envoy to the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, spoke to the Security Council through video-conferencing and sounded the alarm about the recent decision. He warned of the “potential risk of violent escalation” that exists following that decision and asked that all parties choose dialogue and avoid provocations.

The world response has literally isolated the US, considered to be world’s most powerful democracy.
