Srinagar

The 434-km long Srinagar-Leh Highway was closed for traffic since last evening due to heavy snowfall at zojila pass, leaving number of trucks and light passenger vehicles stranded.

Officials said that around six inches of fresh snow has accumulated in Sonamarag area and more than ten inches in Zojila area and the snow fall was continuing when last report came in.
Traffic on strategic highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, remained closed since last evening, officials said.

Border Roads organization (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already pressed into service machines and men to clear the road, he said.

If weather permits, and there is no further snowfall the highway will be thrown open to traffic again, officials said.

Meanwhile number of vehicles, mostly trucks and carrying passengers are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass.

They said the efforts were on to first clear the stranded vehicles. “We are trying our best to pass the stranded vehicles first from Sonamrag to Kargil.”
