Srinagar: People of Budgam district of central Kashmir today blocked the Poshker-Magam road at Sharan against the alleged police “high-handedness.”

As a result of the blockade, traffic on the road came to a standstill for nearly two hours, much to the inconvenience of the commuters.

Locals said a group of policemen allegedly asked a local Sumo driver of the area last evening to drop them at police station Khag which he did without asking for the fare.

“ But after the sumo driver dropped them at the police station, the policemen asked him to visit station head,” the agitated villagers said adding “he (Sumo driver) was asked to keep the vehicle there till he would not show necessary documents”.

“It is high handedness of police. If they wanted to check the documents, they should have checked the same on road and before asking him to drop them at Khag. What did it mean to take the vehicle for one purpose and seize it without any reason? The villagers asked.

However, Station House Officer (SHO) Police station Khag Mohammad Aslam denied the allegations levelled by the villagers and said that the vehicle was seized during checking on the road.

“We asked him (sumo driver) to show the documents but he left the sumo there. Can’t we check the vehicle,” Aslam asked.

Sources, however, said that the vehicle was later released by police. Kashmir Wire
