JAMMU: As many as 6470.11 canals of Wakf property across Jammu and Kashmir is under the then illegal occupation of individuals and institutions, including defense forces, across the state, the government told the state legislature on Monday. Of this 2929.1 have the occupation of individuals and the balance 3541.10 kanals is in illegal possession of various central and state government institutions.
Details revealed that 2219.03 kanals are under the illegal occupation of the army; 26.03 kanals are in illegal possession of paramilitary forces; 1126.12 kanals were occurred by various government departments and the balance 2929.01 kanals is wit individuals illegally.
Though this forms a fraction of the overall wake property, this still is a huge land worth billions of rupees. J&K has 97071.18 kanals of wake property across the state of which Jammu division alone has 42056.08 kanals.
Jammu and Kashmir has twin Wakf systems, the Muslim Wakf Board in Kashmir that was carved out of Muslim Auqaf Trust and in Jammu, the J&K Wake Council. Two Kashmir shrines, on each in Tral and Qazigund, (Ziarat Rahim Sahab Nawa) are being taken care of the Council.
The details tabled before the House said that the Council is resource rich. It owns 552 shops, 188 houses, 22 building, nine hotels, 95 rooms an 28 halls across the region. This is in addition to the landed estate it has in the region. In Jammu alone, it has a landed estate of 10276, which is slightly less than the other big estate that is located in Rajouri.
The government said that in last three years, various units affiliated with the council recorded a cumulative income of Rs 58.27 crore. It includes an income of Rs 17.38 crore in 2014-15, Rs 19.10 crore in 2015-16, and Rs 21.81 crore in 2016-17.
Interestingly, the expenditure booked by the Council on its operations in the three years was Rs 48.88 crore. Of this an amount of Rs 13.83 crore was spent in 2014-15, Rs 15.04 crore in 2015-16 and Rs 18.02 crore in 2016-17.
