SRINAGAR: 46 doctors, 22 MBBS students and 15 paramedics from the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Tuesday tested positive for COVID19, taking the total number of staff testing positive in the past 18 days to 546.

Prof Dr Mohammad Salim Khan, head of the department of community medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, and nodal officer, Covid, said 46 doctors, 22 MBBS students and 15 paramedics tested COVID Positive in one day in GMC Srinagar, SMHS Hospital, Lal Ded Hospital, GB Pant Children’s Hospital, Bone and Joint Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital, Super Specialty Hospital and Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences Associated hospitals.

He said that 546 doctors, MBBS students and paramedics have been infected by novel Coronavirus from January 1 to January 18 in various hospitals of Kashmir controlled by the GMC.

Dr Khan urged people to stop visiting hospitals unnecessarily.  “Please follow COVID appropriate behaviour SOPs religiously. Avoid gatherings. Please wear facemasks necessarily and maintain social distancing,” he said.

“Omicron seems predominantly circulating but Delta variant could also be affecting people leading to moderate to severe illness,” he added.

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing a major surge of cases since January 5. On today, three Covid-induced deaths and 4651 infections were recorded.
