On the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court police on Thursday exhumed the body of a young boy who was allegedly killed in the police custody in Kishtwar in 2002.

The exhumation was made in Padder village of Kishtwar for the collection of DNA samples, so that identity of the deceased could be established.

A team of District Administration Kishtwar headed by ADDC Kishtwar Avtar Singh Chib and Additional SP Kishtwar Abdul Qayoom along with a team of doctors and FSL experts exhumed the body of the victim in Kijai village of Padder Tehsil in Kishtwar District and collected necessary sample.

Earlier a petition was filed by Haji Mohammad Aslam who claimed of being father of the youth who was allegedly killed in police custody. Police had claimed that the deceased was a Pakistani militant.

The petitioner had submitted that Mustaq Ahmed who was a student of 9th class and was on rolls in Higher Secondary School Thanamandi in District Rajouri went missing in the month of June 2002 while he was on his way to school and despite search about his whereabouts could not be traced out.

The petitioner had lodged a missing report at concerned Police Station as well. The petitioner further submitted that he later on came to know that his son had joined militancy ranks.

He further admitted that his son was apprehended by one Gulam Qadir and his STF team alive and handed over to SSP Doda. On receiving this information, the petitioner immediately rushed to Doda where he met with higher police officers and requested them to allow the petitioner to meet with his son in custody. The officers though admitted the custody of his son but declined the meeting.

The petitioner had submitted that after some time, he contacted the police officer on telephone and requested to allow him to meet his son but to his surprise and dismay police officers who earlier were apparently very cordial at once changed their colours and tone and flatly refused the arresting of his son.

The petitioner had submitted that he received a telephone call and a letter written by some unknown person saying that his son has been killed by the police in custody at Police Station Doda and his body has been buried in a far-flung area in village Kajai Padder.

The petitioner had submitted that he rushed to the said village and contacted the local people and on enquiry they revealed that police had handed over a body of some stranger youth to them for burial saying that the said body was of some Pakistani Militant.

The people of village also showed  him some pictures of the body and he identified his son.

The petitioner filed an application before District Magistrate Kishtwar requesting that the grave be opened and the body be exhumed and post-mortem and DNA test be got conducted, so that identity of the body is fully established.
