8 Lakh May Die If Magnitude 8 Quake Hits Himalaya Region: NDMA

KL Report

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)  has warned that over eight lakh people may die if an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale occurs in the seismically-active Himalayan states from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.

This was stated by NDMA’s  vice chairman M. Shashidhar Reddy. According to Reddy entire Himalayan belt is seismically very active and during a short span of 53 years between 1897 and 1950, four major earthquakes, (Shillong -1897, Kangra -1905, Bihar-Nepal -1934 and Assam -1950) exceeding magnitude 8 on the Richter scale occurred in the region causing vast devastation.

“No such earthquake has occurred since 1950. Studies indicate that enough strains have accumulated to generate magnitude 8 or larger earthquakes in the Himalayan region. If an earthquake of magnitude 8 occurs in the Himalayan states, eight to nine lakh people may lose their lives,”Reddy said.

He further added that when and where such an earthquake would occur is not known and therefore, the best approach to face such an eventuality was to work for developing an earthquake-resilient society.

  1. The earthquake that took place in 2005 in the state of jammu & kashmir . Was a practical what V.C of NDMA has said is a theory ! What happened aftermath 2005 earthquake is a History i would like to put a Question here are we realy prepared for such incident there is no doubt aftermath earthquake 2005 various seminar traning programe we held The State disaster managenment cell was formed lot of theotical paper we read but when it came to practical in Chenab valley earthquake we were again helpless ? It is not only the authourities but we citizen responsibilty to think over it and get trained to

  2. India is a country with people who have no sense of public decorum, with no strict health and safety in mind as well as in buildings, what ever preparation procedure, the situation is full of pessimism. The Himalayan fault is a subduction fault zone capable of the worlds largest earthquakes, magnitudes can exceed 9.0. Japan had a magnitude 9.0 in 2011 and, even though Japan is the most prepared country in the world still, 20,000 people still lost their lives.
