 The state government Tuesday revealed that 812 middle pass youth were recruited as special police officers (SPOs) in J&K police.

The findings were revealed in the legislative council when PDP lawmaker, Murtaza Khan asked the government whether chief minister, Omar Abdullah, had promised middle pass youth of the state a job in J&K police during 2008 assembly elections. Nasir Aslam Wani, the state home minister, maintained that was the government was not aware of any such a promise made by Omar.

 Earlier, Wani informed the house that middle pass youth have been absorbed as constables in the police department, pursuant to the rehabilitation-cum-regularization policy for the SPO’s, announced in September 2009.

 As per official reports, out of 21 districts, Kupwara district with 132 SPOs from 2009 to 2012 has registered the highest number of police recruitments while Samba saw no recruitment. In Anantnag, 35 SPOs were registered, 44 in Baramulla, 15 in Bandipora, 38 in Budgam, 96 in, 13 in Ganderbal, 15 in Kathua, 81 in Kishtwar, 29 in Kulgam, 65 in Poonch, 48 in Pulwama, 37 in Rajouri, 64 in Ramban, 36 in Reasi, 19 in Shopian, six in Udampur and one in Kargil over the last four years. In Jammu, the number of SPOs recruited is 14 while in Srinagar, 24 SPOs were recruited.
