Day after government blacklisted a Jammu based Pharma Company for allegedly supplying superiors medicines to government hospitals, authorities in Valley have revealed that there were complaints of the involvement of some doctors also in prescribing the superior drugs to patients in lieu of commission.
Highly placed sources in the medical department told a local news agency, KNS that the authorities had been receiving complaints that doctors in various hospitals in southern district of Islamabad were indulging in malpractices and were prescribing the sub standard medicines to the patients to get monitory benefit from the companies producing these superiors’ drugs.
“There are various hospitals in Islamabad where patients get a prescription for spurious drugs because there is a nexus between doctors and the drug store owners who sell these drugs to make huge benefits at the cost of human lives”, sources told KNS. The sources alleged that these hospitals have become a hub for such kind of illegal activities and doctors there are the part of the process.
Interestingly the ‘callous’ doctors have not spared children to whom they have been also reportedly prescribing the spurious medicines.
“They are prescribing sub standard quality of Green vela Powder, which some of the reputed doctors say is not fit for children”, added sources. They alleged that most of the drug store in the vicinity of these hospitals sells the product at Rs 160, where as they get it from the companies for just Rs 30 owing to its sub standard preparation.
Sources also alleged that doctor who prescribes the medicine gets their share of 60 rupees per patient.
Wishing anonymity a senior doctor from SMHS Hospital admitted, “Such things do prevail in a number of places and we really want the authorities to take stern action against every erring person.”
A number of prescriptions provided to the office of KNS particularly that of the Maternity and Child care hospital Islamabad mention some of the drugs which experts allege are of spurious nature.
Meanwhile Director Health Kashmir Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman also admitted that something was going wrong in Islamabad Hospitals, “We have also received a number of complaints particularly from Islamabad district regarding this”, Director told KNS. He however added that department would soon take a severe action against the involved doctors.
When contacted Minster for health Shabir Ahmad Khan said that a commission would be set up to look into the matter and added that if any doctor was found involved, he will be dealt severely.
“A proper strategy is being devised to tackle this grave problem, for this a drug policy has already been approved by state cabinet”, Minster told KNS.
I think sporious drug supply is one issue.the other big issue is token supply of drugs,that lead to under treatment and drug resistance
