Protests and clashes erupted against the death of two militants on Friday after a gun battle erupted in Tangmarg area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Reports reaching here said that as soon as the news about the death of the two local militants spread across the town, people in large numbers came out on roads post Friday prayers amid massive anti-India and pro-Kashmir slogans in Kanchipora area.

Forces resorted to tear gas shelling to curb the protests, witnesses said.

Similar reports came from ‘Model Village’ Palhallan with youth raising pro-freedom slogans.

The duo slain militants were identified as Mehraj Ahmad Bhat (Indergam Pattan) and Adil Ahmad Mir (Brath, Sopore).

Locals of Kanchipora were demanding bodies of the slain militants.

SSP Baramulla, Imtiyaz Hussain, told Kashmir Life that JKP, Army’s 2RR and CRPF’s 176 Bn was involved in the gun battle with the militants. “The militants were given a chance of surrender which they refused,” he said.

The militants belonged to Hizb, he added. “2AK series rifles, arms and ammunition were recovered from them.”
