The ongoing indefinite strike on the call given by the All J&K Patwar Association has severely affected the working of the revenue department with the association refusing to budge till their demands are fulfilled. Patwaris have been demanding removal of pay anomalies, promotion of Girdawars to Naib Tehsildar, stoppage of direct recruitment as Naib Tehsildar, renovation and construction of Patwarkhana, creation of new Patwar Halqas and their inclusion into technical grade.

President All Jammu and Kashmir Patwari Association Afaq Ahmed Shopiani said few of the Patwaris were recruited in 2002 who are juniors but, they are being paid more than their seniors. “We want this dual policy to end. Over 963 Patwaris across Jammu and Kashmir are suffering due to this pay anomaly,” Afaq said.

Afaq said the impasse between the Patwaris and the government will continue till their demands are not fulfilled. “The government has already accepted our demands way back in 2008 but, the orders are not being implemented. We gave a year’s time the government but they are asking for more which is not acceptable to us,” said Syed Abid Andrabi district President AJKPA.

“Our demands are being deliberately avoided despite our repeated agitations,” Said one of the Patwaris.

Normal work in the revenue department remained affected as the strike of Jammu and Kashmir revenue officials (Patwaris) seeking abolition of pay anomalies entered its second week. Demonstrations were reported from many district headquarters of the state. The Patwaris are demanding, inter alia, removal of pay anomalies through implementation of Sixth Pay Commission from retrospective effect, and recruitment of more revenue officials.

“Despite assurances in this regard, the state government did not pay any heed to our demands. We are compelled to go on strike as the government is insensitive towards our demands,” said Ghulam Muhammad an agitating employee. .
