Srinagar police Monday arrested a Molvi of a local Masjid here for murdering a youth by pushing him in river Jehlum on the pretext of performing a sacred ritual in order to solve his family problems of strained relation with his spouse.

Giving details of the case, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)Srinagar, S A H Bukhari stated that on 30-09-2013 Noor Mohammad Khanday resident of Bund Qamarwari lodged a missing report at Police Post Qamarwari regarding his son-in-law Shah Nawaz Ahmad Dar son of Khazir Mohammad resident of Chewa, Budgam. He reported that his son-in law went to the local mosque to offer Isha prayers on 29-09-2013 and since then he has not returned back to his in laws home.

“Police started a search for the missing person by collecting evidence to know his whereabouts. On 03- 10-2013, a body later identified as that of Shah Nawaz Ahmad Dar was fished out from the river Jehlum at Maloora. As such an inquest proceedings under 174 Cr. PC was initiated and accordingly, a special team was constituted to ascertain the cause of the suspicious death,” said SSP Srinagar.

He further mentioned that the deceased was wearing a Pheran in which an ID card of Abdul Gani Naik resident of Chimmer, Kulgam who is working as an Imam of Masjid Abu-Turab at Band Qamarwari was retrieved. Later the Imam identified that the Pharen belonged to him.  “During the course of investigation the in-laws of deceased as well as other relatives were verified who were put to questioning wherein it came to fore that the deceased and his wife mostly used to have a bitter relation with each other. It also came to fore front that Molvi Mohammad Amin Naik son of Gani resident of Chimmer Kulgam used to visit the house of in-laws of deceased number of times a day.”

According to Police, the Call details of the Molvi and wife of the deceased were analyzed and it was noticed that Molvi had been in constant touch with the wife of the deceased in odd hours of the night for long time. Also, a Pharan of Molvi Mohammad Amin Naik and his identity card were recovered from the deceased. Then Molvi Amin was put to sustained questioning and he confessed that he has develop illicit relations with the wife of deceased and he was the hindrance in their relation.

“Molvi plotted a conspiracy to eliminate the deceased, and on 29-9-2013 the deceased Shahnawaz Ahmad Dar visited the room of Molvi after Isha prayers and narrated before him the bitter relation between him and his wife and requested him to ease out the conflict. Since then Molvi had already plotted a conspiracy to eliminate him, he advised the deceased to recite some versus of Quran on a flowing river and provided him Tasbi with directions to recite these verses of Quran 313 times on a river and nobody should see. The Molvi on 29.09.2013 took him to nearby Cement bridge Qamarwari and asked him to close his eyes and recite of the verses of Quran the moment he started recite Wazefa. The Molvi from the behind pushed him and he was drowned in the Jehlum.”

The SSP further said that from evaluation of evidence in hand it transpire that the deceased has been killed by Molvi Mohammad Naik with the intention and motive to remove the hindrance in order to carry his ‘illicit’ relation with the wife of the deceased. A case FIR number 304/13 under section 302, 109 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) was subsequently registered against the Molvi in police station Parimpora.

The SSP, Srinagar further requested all the Masjid Intizamia Committees to verify the antecedents before selecting Imams for their Mosques.

  1. Something is fishy here. The phiran and identity card of the accused being recovered from the dead body is somewhat like a an Indian army claim that an identity card was found from the dead MILITANTS which proclaims them as PAKISTANIS !

  2. the deceased is frm my village in the very first days the doubt was on molvi i also rqst all masjid intizamia tot verify imams before selecting them mainly these type of incidents occur in city SO B CAREFULL
