A top commander of Jaish-e-Muhammad was among two militants killed in the encounter that erupted late Monday night in Sarai Bala area of Srinagar city, police said.
“Forces launched an operation in Maharaja Bazaar following information about the presence of militants in the area, reports quoting a police official said.
He said a gunfight broke out between forces and suspected militants.
“Police party was fired upon from the house of one Ghulam Muhammad Hakim. The fire was retaliated triggering a gunfight in which two militants were killed.”
One of the militants was identified as Saifullah, a top Jaish commander, while the identity of the other is yet to be ascertained.
The encounter took place on a day when three police men were killed in two separate suspected militant strikes in Srinagar.
In the first incident, militants shot two policemen from close range at Mill Stop in Zadibal area.
The policemen, who died on the spot, were identified as assistant sub-inspector Ghulam Mohammad and head constable Nazir Ahmad.
A few hours later, another policeman was killed in a strike in the city’s Tengpora area.
