SRINAGAR: The rescuers in the remote Uttarakhand landslide site have finally been able to locate the missing Kashmiri’s workers body. He has been identified as Mohammad Zaman Khan, a 20-year-old resident of Bagna in Uri’s Boniyar belt.

With the recovery of Khan’s body, the death toll in the Friday tragedy has reached eight. Seven bodies, all residents of Uri, were recovered on Friday afternoon but one of them was missing. His body was recovered on Saturday, reports reaching here said.

The Kashmiri labourers were working on the implementation of the Char Dham all-weather road in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The landslide hit the Rishikesh-Kedarnath national highway near the Ukhimath area of Banswada. While eight were killed, four were injured.

Workers who have survived the crisis have told families that they were working when the hill caved in over them. The slain eight people were part of the 23-member workers from Uri who are working for the project.

The families of the slain workers were waiting for the bodies till late in the evening. The tragedy has shocked the entire Uri belt. Governor, NC and PDP leaders have expressed their sympathies with the bereaved families. The governor has, in fact, announced an ex-gratia relief of two lakh rupees each to the families whose members were killed in the landslide.

The slain workers were identified as Gulzar Ahmad Sheikh, Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, (Balkote); Zohoor Ahmed Sheikh, Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat (Mohthal); Mushtaq  Ahmad Bhati (Nambla), Syed Shafeeq Hussain and Mohammad Zaman Khan (Bagna).

The injured were identified as Altaf Hussain of Mohthal and Mohammad Abbas Sheikh of Balkote. The injured were evacuated to the AIIMS Rishikesh, some of them in highly critical condition.
