“I congratulate all the Members of Parliament who are taking their oaths today, including those representing the people of Jammu and Kashmir. This is a momentous occasion for our democracy. It is important to acknowledge that while the people of North Kashmir have elected Engineer Rashid, he should be given the opportunity to take his oath and represent his constituents,” he said.

Omar said that members of Parliament from the National Conference will strongly demand justice for all prisoners, including Engineer Rashid. They will also call for the immediate transfer of prisoners held outside Jammu and Kashmir to jails within the region, pending their release.

He highlighted the necessity of recognising the injustice faced by those imprisoned, who are either unable or unwilling to participate in elections. Abdullah stressed that Engineer Rashid should be given the opportunity to take his oath and represent his constituents.

Engineer Rashid, leader of the Awami Ittehad Party, is presently held in Delhi’s Tihar Jail on charges related to a terror-funding case. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, he won the Baramulla seat in Jammu and Kashmir, defeating Omar Abdullah and Sajad Lone, president of the People’s Conference, by a significant margin.
