GMC Anantnag Secures 11 Additional DNB Seats, Total Accredited Seats Reach 63

   

SRINAGAR: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has secured accreditation for an additional eleven (11) Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats from the National Board of Examinations (NBEMS) New Delhi for the 2024 session.

This achievement, announced on January 5, 2024, brings the total count of accredited seats at GMC Anantnag to sixty-three.

Prof Anjum Farhana, the Principal of GMC Anantnag, expressed gratitude for the significant roles played by various departments, including Orthopedics, Pathology, Microbiology, and Physiology. She emphasized the dual impact of these additions on academic pursuits and patient care.

Dr Tajalee Naazir Shora, DNB Coordinator and Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Medicine highlighted the significance of this accreditation as it marks the eighteenth department at GMC Anantnag recognised by the National Board of Examinations. Dr Tajalee noted that GMC Anantnag is the sole medical college with the highest number of accredited DNB seats among new medical colleges.

Dr Owias H Dar, the spokesperson for GMC Anantnag, reiterated the institution’s commitment to transparency and effective communication. The milestone reflects GMC Anantnag’s dedication to delivering advanced education and training in diverse medical fields.

In another notable development, the Department of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery at GMC Anantnag achieved a medical milestone by successfully conducting a Total Laryngectomy on Mushtaq Ahmed, a 62-year-old resident, on January 1, 2024. The surgery, the first of its kind in south Kashmir, was performed by a team led by Prof (Dr) Sajad Qazi, including ENT specialists Dr Amir Yousuf, Dr Umar Shafi, Dr Salman Khurshid, and Dr Ehsan Ahmad.

Dr Owais H Dar highlighted the importance of examining voice changes in elderly individuals with a history of hookah or cigarette smoking. The successful surgery underscores GMC Anantnag’s advancements in cancer treatment, particularly in the early diagnosis and management of Head and Neck cancers through chemo-radiation.

The achievement was praised by Principal Medical College Anantnag Prof (Dr) Anjum Farhana and Medical Superintendent Dr Muzaffar Sherwani, who acknowledged the commitment of the Department of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery. Dr (Prof) Anjum Farhana congratulated the team for successfully conducting the surgery and operating upon challenging cases, marking a significant milestone for the medical institution.
