SRINAGAR: The Paediatric Surgery Department of the Government Medical College Srinagar is performing approximately 750 major operations annually for the last three years, hospital mangers said.

The department’s expertise spans across a myriad of intricate procedures, from genitourinary reconstructive surgeries to Hepatobiliary interventions, Thoracic corrections, Colo-ano-rectal surgeries, Spinal Dysraphism treatments, and cutting-edge Paediatric Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic procedures. Each surgery is a testament to their unwavering commitment to the well-being of their young patients, one official said.

Word of the department’s exceptional work has spread far and wide, attracting the attention of aspiring Paediatric surgeons from across the country. The Genitourinary reconstructive surgeries, in particular, have garnered significant acclaim, drawing in eager observers hungry to learn from the best.

With the demand for observership programmes soaring, the department has decided to make it a regular feature, welcoming young surgeons to immerse themselves in the art and science of Paediatric surgery. Five enthusiastic Paediatric surgeons have already secured their spots for the upcoming programmes in June, eager to glean insights and expertise from the seasoned veterans of the field.

But the department’s dedication to nurturing talent doesn’t end with observership programmes, officials point out. They have also established a prestigious DNB (Diplomate of National Board) programme, aimed at shaping the next generation of Paediatric surgical leaders. Through rigorous training and mentorship, they’re paving the way for a brighter future in Paediatric surgery, ensuring that their legacy of excellence continues for generations to come.
