SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government, on Wednesday appointed administrators for urban local bodies across the Union Territory for a period of six months or until the establishment of the municipalities, whichever is earlier.

As per a notification issued by the Housing & Urban Development Department, the deputy commissioners and additional district development commissioners of respective districts have been designated as administrators of municipal councils and municipal committees.

DCs will serve as administrators for 17 municipal councils, while ADDCs will manage the administrative and financial aspects of 54 municipal committees. This move comes in response to the completion of the elected representatives’ terms across various municipal bodies in the Union Territory.

As per officials, these appointments have been made under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000 in order to oversee the functioning of these civic bodies till fresh elections can be conducted.

The appointment of administrators is therefore seen as an interim arrangement by the UT government before civic polls can be organized in the near future. The administrators will be responsible for day-to-day work as well as the implementation of development works and schemes by the municipal bodies. The notification is expected to come into effect immediately.
