SRINAGAR: The Lok Sabha 2024 elections have offered interesting trends with BJP retaining its stronghold in Jammu and JKNC emerging in Kashmir with two seats each. The fifth seat, the North Kashmir Baramulla, was bagged by independent lawmaker Engineer Rasheed with a huge margin.
However, reading the outcome in terms of assembly segments and vote share of the parties offers a better understanding of the shift in the last five years. The election saw two former Chief Minister’s losing their election.
In Jammu, the Congress offered a serious battle to the BJP but the latter retained the two seats –Jammu and Udhampur, after leaving part of the vote share to a revived Congress.
Kashmir’s mandate was fragmented. While JKNC is the main gainer in Anantnat-Rajouri’s seat and Srinagar, PDP emerged as a runner-up with a slender share.
However, in Baramulla, both the parties along with Sajad Gani Lone faced music as Engineer Rasheed swept the seat with huge margins.
