SRINAGAR: After a week of closure due to heavy snowfall, the Srinagar-Leh highway has reopened for one-way traffic from Sonamarg.
Hundreds of passengers and vegetable vehicles were stranded in Drass and Sonamarg during the closure.
The Border Roads Organization deployed machinery and workers to clear the snow along the treacherous Zojila Pass, facilitating the reopening.
Traffic police officials confirmed that vehicles are allowed to travel from Sonamarg to Kargil, with priority given to passenger vehicles and essential transportation like Tata mobiles carrying vegetables.
Heavy vehicle traffic remains prohibited on the highway for safety reasons amid ongoing winter conditions.
