According to a circular issued by the Director of the Jammu School Education Department, several parents had raised objections to their children being denied admission to Class 1 due to not meeting the age requirement of six years, as outlined in the National Education Policy 2020. The circular acknowledged these concerns and recognised that strict enforcement of the age criteria could result in some students losing an academic year.

In light of this, the department has decided to gradually implement the National Education Policy and provide a one-time relaxation in the age criteria for admission to Class 1 for the academic session 2024-25. The relaxation applies to students who will turn six years old within the next six months, up to September 30, 2024.

The circular emphasised that while this relaxation is a one-time exception, it aligns with similar measures adopted by other states. It also noted the need to establish an upper ceiling for such relaxations, ensuring that the transition period is managed effectively.
