SRINAGAR: Deputy Mayor of Srinagar, Parvez Ahmad Qadri, Saturday expressed dissatisfaction regarding the prolonged delay in conducting the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in the region.
Qadri while addressing the news conference said that the term of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to conclude on November 5. “The delay in conducting the elections has raised questions about the government’s commitment to democratic processes.”
He further added that during the reorganization act, the constitutional amendment was clearly specified, which stated that the Delimitation Commission, along with the Election Commission, should conduct the election before the tenure ends.
“However, despite SMC’s term concluding tomorrow, no elections have been held, which is a violation of constitutional rights,” he said.
“One fails to understand if the constitutional amendment clearly shows the tenure, why the elections were not conducted here,” the Deputy Mayor said—(KNO)
