Kashmir Parts Receive June Snowfall, Heatwave in Offing

   

SRINAGAR: Several higher reaches of Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall on Friday, accompanied by rain in the plains, resulting in a drop in temperatures. However, the Meteorological Department has warned of another heatwave from June 10.

Areas including Affarwat in Gulmarg, Razdan Top, Zojilla, Sadhna Top, and Sinthan Top experienced fresh snowfall, causing a slight decrease in temperatures.

Reports indicate that several places recorded a few inches of rainfall today, with intermittent rainfall continuing for the third straight day in the plains of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Temperatures have fallen further today, with Srinagar, the summer capital, recording a maximum temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, registered a maximum of 23.8 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam settled at 20.4 degrees Celsius,” officials said.

In Kupwara, the temperature settled at 20.9 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag and Gulmarg, a renowned ski-resort, recorded maximum temperatures of 22.7 degrees Celsius and 11.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Monsoon season began in Kashmir on June 1, bringing intermittent rainfall across the Valley in recent days.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said that the weather would remain partly to generally cloudy tomorrow, with a possibility of light rain and thunder in scattered places towards the afternoon. However, conditions are expected to improve from June 9 onwards, with generally dry weather forecasted until June 17, although isolated light rain and thunder cannot be ruled out.

The Meteorological Department advised farmers to resume farm operations, such as spraying and fertilizer application, from June 9 onwards, cautioning of a fresh spell of hot and dry weather, including a heatwave, from June 10 onwards.
