SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has made the use of ‘life-saving jackets’ mandatory for Shikara boats in Dal and Nigeen lakes, as well as other water bodies in the region.

The government issued an order today stating, “To ensure the safety of tourists taking Shikara rides in Dal and Nigeen Lakes and other water bodies, and to prevent any untoward incidents due to inclement weather conditions or other reasons, it is hereby ordered that all Shikara boats registered under the J&K Tourist Trade Act, 1978 must have a minimum of three life-saving jackets of recommended quality and specifications available on board at all times. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the cancellation of the boat’s registration under the said Act, as per the provisions outlined in the J&K Tourism Policy guidelines.” (GNS)
