They have confirmed that the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) will be the minimum requirements for direct recruitment to this position. The UGC made this announcement in the second amendment to the regulations that govern the appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges, as well as the maintenance of standards in higher education, which is called the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2023.

According to the UGC, passing the NET/SET/SLET exams will now be the minimum requirement for becoming an Assistant Professor in any higher education institution. They have also removed the first amendment made in the UGC Regulations of 2021.

Previously, the UGC required candidates to have a doctoral degree (PhD) to be eligible for Assistant Professor positions. However, starting from July 1, 2023, having a PhD will no longer be mandatory. Candidates who pass the NET/SET/SLET exams will now be eligible to apply for Assistant Professor positions in universities and colleges.
