SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has identified 14 sewage treatment projects with a combined planned capacity of 82.5 MLD to address drainage and sewage discharge into the Jhelum, with the proposed 9.5 MLD plant for Sopore listed for Phase-II implementation, according to an Assembly reply.
The projects are at different stages, ranging from preparation of detailed project reports and technical evaluation to allotment and consideration. Several have been assigned October 2027 as the target timeline.
The largest proposed facility is a 35 MLD STP for Srinagar, which is presently under the National Green Tribunal (NGT). A 6 MLD plant has been proposed for Baramulla and is under technical evaluation, while another 6 MLD facility is planned for Bandipora with October 2027 listed against it.
The Housing and Urban Development Department said DPRs had been prepared for 3.5 MLD and 2.0 MLD plants at Bijbehara and Awantipora respectively. A 3.5 MLD STP at Pampore is under allotment, while a separate entry provides for another 3.5 MLD facility at Pampore along with a 15 KLD faecal sludge treatment plant, also under allotment.
DPRs for 2.5 MLD plants at Sumbal and Hajin are under consideration. Ganderbal has a proposed 4.5 MLD plant, Watergam 1.5 MLD and Budgam 2.5 MLD, with October 2027 indicated for each. Shopian has a proposed 15 KLD FSTP with the same October 2027 timeline.
For Sopore, the department has listed a 9.5 MLD STP, but said it would be taken up in Phase-II.
The disclosure came in response to Un-Starred D.No. 1/6/275 by MLA Irshad Rasool Kar, who sought details about drainage infrastructure and measures to prevent drains from discharging into the Jhelum and Wular Lake.
For Sopore town itself, the government said two drainage schemes have been envisaged. The ongoing “Drainage Scheme (DS) Sopore”, estimated at Rs 497 lakh, is under execution and has achieved about 80 per cent physical progress. Another “Drainage Scheme MC Sopore”, also estimated at Rs 497 lakh, was approved during the current financial year 2026-27 as a new work.
The reply also refers to the preparation of a comprehensive town-wide drainage network, following the engagement of the J&K Urban Environmental Engineering Department on March 25, 2026, although no specific status was provided against that part of the Assembly question.
On Wular Lake, the department said there were no identified drains emanating directly from habitations and discharging into the lake as direct outfalls.
