SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir recorded completion of 16,015 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) during 2025-26, even as only three houses were sanctioned in the Union Territory during the financial year, according to data tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The figures were provided by the Ministry of Rural Development in response to a question on the construction and status of rural houses under PMAY-G.
The State/UT-wise data shows that JK accounted for 16,015 completed houses during 2025-26, while the three houses sanctioned during the year were part of the overall PMAY-G implementation, irrespective of the financial year in which the target was originally allocated.
Nationally, 32.47 lakh houses were sanctioned and 26.57 lakh houses completed during 2025-26, including sanctions issued in previous financial years.
As of August 3, 2026, the Centre had allocated a total target of 4.18 crore houses to States and Union Territories under PMAY-G. Of these, 3.91 crore houses had been sanctioned and 3.12 crore completed, leaving around 79 lakh sanctioned houses under construction.
The Union Government said States and UTs are responsible for ensuring suitable house designs based on local climatic conditions, using appropriate local materials and technologies. The Ministry has also rolled out the Rural Mason Training programme to improve construction quality by training masons in rural areas.
To speed up construction, the government said it is allocating targets and releasing funds on time, regularly reviewing progress, monitoring implementation through a dashboard and holding workshops with States and UTs.
PMAY-G beneficiaries are also supported through convergence with other government schemes. These include piped drinking water through the Jal Jeevan Mission, electricity connections through relevant Central and State schemes, and LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The government said up to five per cent of PMAY-G targets are reserved for Special Projects, including rehabilitation or relocation of families whose houses have been completely or substantially damaged by natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes and fires.
At the national level, at least 60 per cent of the PMAY-G target is earmarked for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe households, subject to the availability of eligible beneficiaries.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), pucca houses with basic amenities are also being provided to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group households.
During the last two financial years, expenditure under PMAY-G Special Projects stood at Rs 528.04 crore, while spending in Aspirational Districts amounted to Rs 17,281.58 crore, including Central and State shares.
For PVTG beneficiaries under PM-JANMAN, the Centre released Rs 2,465.38 crore during 2024-25 and 2025-26, while total expenditure, including contributions from the Centre and States, stood at Rs 6,329.06 crore.
