SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police have uncovered a scheme in which 18 Rohingyas illicitly obtained ‘Indian National’ identity cards by marrying locals in the state, Republic World reported. The investigation disclosed that these Rohingyas entered into marriages in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir, encompassing four districts in Jammu and three in the Kashmir valley.
Officials informed Republic that the police identified 18 Rohingyas who had wed locals, with six in Kishtwar, three in Doda, and two in each of Jammu, Ramban, Poonch, and Bandipora, along with one in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
Kishtwar Police reported the arrest of 13 individuals, including six Rohingyas and their spouses. The Rohingyas collaborated with locals from Dachan area to obtain documents such as Domicile Certificate, Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Cards, and Ration Cards.
The arrested women in Kishtwar are named Zinta Begum, Anwara Begum, Shabu Begum, Laila Begum, Hassina Jan, and Shaheena Begum.
An official involved in the investigation said that the current number is preliminary and may increase as the probe advances. The interrogation of those arrested or detained during the raids in the Jammu region could reveal further details.
“We are looking into every angle, be it National Security or their involvement in local crimes, if any. If something similar emerges, we will be initiating legal action separately. This case only pertains to intelligence inputs suggesting Rohingyas having access to India’s national identity cards using illegal ways,” added the official.
The report highlighted that 18 Rohingyas have been arrested across three Jammu districts as part of the police crackdown on Rohingyas and their supporters who unlawfully acquired ‘Indian National’ identification cards with the aid of locals. In Kishtwar, 13 arrests were made, with four in Poonch and one in Rajouri. Additionally, over 40 individuals have been detained in the Jammu region. Police recovered illegally acquired Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks, and revenue records during the operation.
