SRINAGAR: Police said two persons including a militant were killed in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Kanelwan belt that falls in Islamabad district. While the slain militant was identified, the identity of the other person is still unknown.

Police said they had specific inputs about the presence of three militants in Herpora Kanelwan Karvel area on basis of which 3 RR and CRPF 40/90 Bn launched a cordon and search operation. There was exchange of fire between the two sides as the cordon was being enforced.

“At around midnight taking advantage of darkness two militants fired and managed to give a slip,” the police spokesman said. “Cut off party of Army retaliated fire.”

Later, the police said, they learnt that an individual riding a motorcycle Yamaha Libero (JK13-527?) with erased last numerical got killed in cross firing.   “No material leading to identity or I-card could be retrieved,” he said. “Two mobile phones (Nokia 1209) and Jivi-N300 were seized from the said individual.”

The spokesman identified the slain militant as Yawar Nissar Shergujri alias Algazi got killed in the encounter. He was a Hizb ul Mujahideen recruit.

From the spot of the clash, police said they recovered an SLR – a weapon usually being used by the police and paramilitary forces – 2 magazines, 40 rounds, one Chinese hand grenade and a pouch was recovered from the slain militant.

“One solider of 3 RR namely Rifleman Rohit Kumar No. 13771129K also sustained injuries,” the spokesman dded.

The details of the overnight encounter from sources other than police were yet to be received.
