A 22-year-old youth has been killed in North Kashmir’s district Kupwara Saturday late night.

Identified as Asif Iqbal,  son of Mohammad Iqbal locals alleged that he was killed by the army near his home.

While talking to Kashmir Life, a local wishing anonymity said that Asif was killed after army opened fire in Thindpora village of Kralpora in Kupwara at around 11:30 pm.

Giving details he said that Asif, a sumo driver was called by somebody to ferry a patient. Before he could take his sumo bearing registration number JK05C-760 out of his house, the locals said army had laid an ambush in the area and fired indiscriminately, resulting in his death on way to Srinagar hospital.

A police official of the area confirmed the killing. He, however, did not comment on the role of the army. “As of now we don’t know anything,” he said.

Quoting reports, SSP Kupwara Shamsheer Hussain while confirming the killing has said that it was a case of “mistaken identity.”

“We appeal people to cooperate with us to know under what circumstances the army fired. We request them not to take law into their hands and cooperate with us,” he said
