SRINAGAR: As many as 223 roads and 55 bridges were damaged in Surankote constituency during the floods of 2026, with the Jammu and Kashmir Government identifying 223 roads and 50 bridges for permanent restoration.
The Public Works (R&B) Department disclosed the figures in response to a starred question, D No. 1/6/236, tabled by MLA Choudhary Mohammed Akram regarding damage to road infrastructure, including Foot Julla Bridges, following cloudbursts and flash floods in the constituency.
The department said work-wise details of the roads and bridges identified for permanent restoration have been provided in Annexure A to the government reply. It also said 16 PMGSY roads were damaged, with their details listed separately in Annexure B.
The reply did not provide the work-wise details contained in the annexures, including the individual locations, estimated costs or status of each restoration project.
On the Mondi-Paghla road, the government said the road, officially designated as T04-Bufliaz to Mandi Paghla, was taken over by the Public Works (R&B) Department from PWD (R&B) during 2022-23.
The 63.4-kilometre road was subsequently sanctioned for upgradation under PMGSY-III at a total cost of Rs 112.66 crore.
In addition, 10 major bridges along the road were sanctioned under PMGSY-III during 2023-24 at a cumulative cost of Rs 82.40 crore.
The government said 47 km of the road has so far been blacktopped, while work on all the sanctioned bridges is under way.
The remaining road and bridge works are expected to be completed by March 2027, according to the reply.
The government was responding to questions on the extent of damage caused to vital and other roads and bridges in Surankote constituency by the recent cloudburst and flash floods, the measures being taken for their permanent restoration, and the status of the Mondi-Paghla road project.
