The government on Friday revealed that given the security situation across the state, there are no plans to disband the Village Defence Committee (VDC) set-up.

The revelation came when two NC lawmakers sought details about the crimes they have committed over the years. The government admitted that there were 221 cases registered against VDC members in Jammu region.

These included 23 cases of murder, seven rapes, 15 cases of rioting and three cases under NDPS act. So far, 205 cases have been challaned, the government said and inquest proceedings were under way in four cases.

The government said the VDC set up is under review on regular basis and all efforts are being made to improve their working. As and when any VDC member is found involved in any act of misuse of his allotted weapon, the government said, he is immediately being disengaged and appropriate action is initiated against him.

So far, the government said five accused have been convicted, 42 have been acquitted and 121 are still facing trial.
