North Kashmir’s Sopore town Wednesday shut to commemorate the Sopore massacre in which 55 civilians were killed by BSF on Jan 6, 1993.

On this day, in 1993, BSF men fired indiscriminately in Sopore market, setting shops, houses on fire—charring civilians to death. Total 55 civilians were killed in the massacre.

To mourn the dead, all shops and business establishments remained closed in Sopore today, besides public transport is off the roads. Special prayers were offered in mosques and graveyards.

After passing through twists and turns, the case was handed over to CBI—that closed the case after twenty years without indicting any paramilitary man.
